Xenon headlights use a revolutionary bulb concept within the same projector configuration as ellipsoid lamps to provide a brighter, more precisely focused beam. Operating on the discharge principle used in extremely high-powered lights for sports stadiums, the bulb contains a mixture of Xenon gas and various metal halides (mercury, sodium and others) that vaporize under the heat of operation. Instead of the conventional glowing filament, an arc of light between two electrodes produces the light. Some manufacturers call this type of headlight "High Intensity Discharge," or HID.
Because of their more intense illumination, Xenon headlights must be aimed correctly to avoid undue glare to oncoming traffic. Consequently, models equipped with optional Xenon low-beam headlights include automatic headlight leveling.
