Can you fall in love with somebody that you have never met? I mean, you've seen pictures of them, and talked to them via email/IM/phone, but never met them in person. Is this technically love at first sight?
I know nobody really reads this, so it's pretty much a rhetorical question ;-)

Isn't the definition of infatuation something like "feeling strongly about someone you haven't completely gotten to know"?
Not to be a killjoy or anything :-)

But really what is the difference than meeting somebody in person and talking to them or just talking to them on the phone? Yah, you don't have the "physical thing" present, but you, 99.9% of the time, are getting the real person that you would get in person. And you can fall for somebody's personality. Of course, the physical attraction must be there... but that's easy. Seeing a few photos of somebody is more than sufficient in a lot of ways -- I'm (and I'd think I'm not alone) physically attracted to many girls I've only see photos of.
I always put infatuation as something you have for somebody you never really talk to -- like that girl in high school that you thought was gorgeous but you can't approach her due to being too intimidated. To me, that's infatuation, not love. But once you have talked to the person, it's more up in the air :)

I believe it can be a great way to meet people but like the previous comment said, there has to be a physical attraction too. I believe its a different way of meeting people you might not have met otherwise. Would the romance last once you met? I am not sure...
