Duck Hunt
I now have a better understanding of how Duck Hunt (one of the best games EVER, for the original Nintendo) works... I was always amazed at the "magic" behind the game. Very cool.... make sure to read the whole article, as the first post is somewhat accurate and the last post is the correct answer I think.

The last post is indeed the correct one. This is just like how light pens on the Commodore 64 worked -- the pen sent a signal back to the CPU when it detected a scanline being painted, and since the computer could calculate what pixel was being drawn at the moment that signal was sent, it knew where you were pointing on the screen.
That's also why you had to "calibrate" the pen first... the computer needed to know how much delay was present between the pen detecting the raster beam and the signal getting back to the processor.

You sure know how to drain the magic out of something.
